Friends boost school holiday activities at Sandwell libraries

Children and families can enjoy a wide range of entertaining activities at Sandwell libraries during the school holidays thanks to support from The Federation of Friends of Sandwell Libraries.

From storytelling sessions and juggling to music, animal encounters and theatre experiences, there are activities for everyone to enjoy.

The Federation of Friends of Sandwell Libraries is putting on activities led by professional entertainers across the borough’s 19 libraries during school holidays in 2018.

Friends groups raise money to help libraries put on engaging activities throughout the year, including the long summer holidays.

Sandwell Council’s Local Area Budget is supporting the Federation’s school holiday programme.

The Federation has also secured money from Awards for All, which is being used to help fund family-based activities around health and wellbeing.

Councillor Syeda Khatun, Sandwell Council’s deputy leader, said: “Local volunteer friends groups play a vital role in supporting our libraries and helping us put on an exciting range of activities throughout the year.

“These activities will bring many children and families together during school holidays, helping children to develop their social, creative and life skills and forge new friendships while having lots of fun.”

Secretary of the Federation Nina Rogers said: “These exciting activities will encourage creativity, help develop a love of finding things out and show the fun to be found in a library.

“We hope they will encourage more families to use our fantastic library facilities over the year.”

Children aged four to 11 can also take part in the Summer Reading Challenge at any Sandwell library over the school summer holidays. The annual challenge, which this year has the theme Mischief Makers, encourages children to read six library books during the holidays.
