Live music to entertain all ages gets under way this Friday (19 July) with the start of the Birmingham, Sandwell & Westside Jazz Festival.
The opening weekend includes festival favourites Ricky Cool & the In Crowd at Central Library West Bromwich at 7pm on Friday (19 July) – buy tickets now for this electrifying mix of rhythm and blues, ska, bluebeat and soul. It’s £5.50 in advance or £7.50 on the door. Doors open at 6.30pm and there is a licensed bar. Call the library for tickets on 0121 569 4904 or get tickets from any Sandwell library.
Jazz trumpeter Bruce Adams and pianist Dave Newton get the festival under way earlier in the day with a free concert at Sandwell Arts Café, West Bromwich, at 12noon. They will also be performing a free concert at Lightwoods Park, Bearwood, at 7pm.
The opening day also sees France’s Les Zauto Stompers de Paris raising the roof with jazz classics at the Manor House Museum, West Bromwich, at 7pm. Free admission.
And that’s just the start! The opening Saturday’s (20 July) free concerts include French singer-songwriter Florence Joelle at Wednesbury Museum & Art Gallery at 2pm, America’s Bobby Woods at Cradley Heath Library at 7pm and barbershop singing from The Anvil Chorus at Wednesbury Library at 7pm.
Then on Sunday (21 July), The Rip Roaring Success bring hot jazz and old-time country to the Manor House at 2pm and Lithuania’s The Schwings perform vintage swing and New Orleans-style jazz at Thimblemill Library at 7pm.
Sandwell is an official partner in the international festival for the third year running, with events from 19-28 July 2019, most of which are free.
International artists are joining a host of homegrown talent including stars from Sandwell.
Next week’s highlights include hot jazz, swing and Dixieland with Spain’s Potato Head Jazz Band at Blackheath Library (0121 569 4920) on Friday 26 July at 7pm and the legendary King Pleasure & the Biscuit Boys at Central Library West Bromwich (0121 569 4904) at 7pm on Saturday 27 July.
